Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships: Largest UK Athletics Event in History

The 27th European Athletics Championships will be held at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium from 10-16 August 2026, marking the first time a British city has hosted Europe’s premier athletics event. With over 1,500 elite athletes from more than 50 nations, the championship will be the largest athletics event held in the UK outside of the Olympics.
Unprecedented Ticket Demand
Ticket sales have exceeded all expectations, with Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening sessions already sold out. In response to the surging demand, organisers have announced plans to install additional seating structures at the Alexander Stadium to accommodate more spectators.
Tickets remain available for daytime sessions and the earlier part of the week, starting from just £10 for adults and £5 for under-16s. Organisers are encouraging fans to secure their places quickly as remaining allocations are expected to sell out well before August.
The Venue
The Alexander Stadium underwent a comprehensive renovation between 2019 and 2022, increasing its permanent capacity to 18,000 with the ability to expand to 40,000 for major events. The facility, which served as the centrepiece of the 2022 Commonwealth Games, features world-class track and field facilities that meet the highest international standards.
The stadium’s location in Perry Barr, with excellent transport connections including nearby rail stations and major road links, makes it accessible to spectators from across the West Midlands and beyond.
Road Events
In addition to the track and field programme at the Alexander Stadium, the championships will feature road events through Birmingham’s streets. The Half Marathon Race Walk takes place on Saturday 15 August morning, followed by the Marathon Race Walk on Sunday 16 August morning, offering free spectating opportunities along the routes.
Volunteer Programme
The organising committee is recruiting 1,500 volunteers to support the delivery of the championships. Applications close on 10 March 2026, with roles ranging from spectator services and athlete liaison to media operations and results technology. The volunteer programme builds on the successful model established during the Commonwealth Games.
Legacy of Major Athletics Events
Birmingham’s hosting of the European Athletics Championships continues the city’s growing track record in world-class sporting events. Following the 2018 World Indoor Championships, the 2022 Commonwealth Games, and regular Diamond League meetings, the city has established itself as one of Europe’s leading athletics destinations.
The Novuna UK Athletics Outdoor Championships will also be held at the Alexander Stadium on 20-21 June 2026, serving as a key selection event for British athletes hoping to compete at the European Championships two months later.
