Birmingham Airport Announces Terminal Transformation and 19 New Routes for 2026

Birmingham Airport is undergoing its most significant transformation in years, with a major terminal upgrade introducing three new restaurants and an executive business lounge, while announcing 19 new flight routes for 2026. The airport recorded its busiest February half-term ever with a 10% increase in passenger numbers.
Record-Breaking Passenger Numbers
The airport handled over 140,000 passengers during the February half-term period from 13-22 February 2026, representing a 10% increase compared to the same period last year. The growth reflects the continued recovery and expansion of air travel through the Midlands’ principal airport.
The passenger surge has been driven by a combination of increased capacity from existing airlines and the introduction of new routes and services. Business travel has also shown strong recovery, contributing to the decision to invest in enhanced lounge facilities.
Terminal Upgrades
The terminal transformation programme includes three new dining options and a dedicated executive business lounge, all scheduled to open in phases throughout 2026. Among the first to open is the Indian Brewery Company at the International Pier, which began serving passengers in February 2026.
The new business lounge targets the growing corporate travel market, offering premium facilities for business passengers who value comfort and productivity before their flights. The investment reflects the airport’s ambition to compete with larger UK airports for business traveller market share.
New Routes and Airlines
The 19 new routes announced across the Midlands airports network include several exciting additions for Birmingham travellers. TUI will launch twice-weekly services to Tirana, Albania from April, while direct flights to Budapest begin in May 2026.
Major airlines including easyJet, Ryanair, Jet2, and TUI are all expanding their Birmingham operations, with Jet2 adding a Norway and Fjords trips programme for the first time. The expanded route network gives Midlands travellers greater choice for both leisure and business destinations.
Sustainability Commitment
Alongside the commercial expansion, Birmingham Airport has published a new sustainability strategy for 2026-2030, setting an ambitious net zero target by 2030. The strategy covers energy efficiency improvements, community engagement, and investment in cleaner ground operations.
The airport acknowledges the environmental challenges facing aviation while arguing that regional airports play a vital role in reducing surface transport journeys to more distant hub airports. Improved rail connectivity, including the future HS2 interchange, will further enhance the airport’s position in the national transport network.
